On Sunday 20th September Millie Randle attended a Phase 1 England Programme Development Day at Moulton College, Northampton.
The day comprised of about 30 swimmers aged 12 to 14, girls and boys, from across the East Midlands region, who had been selected from their swim times and rankings.
The day comprised of both pool sessions and classroom based learning.
Various coaches from elite clubs around the East Midlands took the sessions. The pool sessions had a major focus on technique- particularly the importance of underwater work and streamlining. [Editor's note: Swimmers! Did you all read that bit?!] All four strokes were worked on during the sessions.
Specialist such as physios and sports therapists talked to the swimmers about the importance of land based warm ups and exercise, as well as having the right mental attitude to swimming.
Parents also had a talk by Mike Parker, the England Programme's Development Manager, for the region who gave helpful tips and suggestions as to the best way for parents to support swimmers during their season.
He stressed the importance of good communication with coaches as well as the need to ensure swimmers have a life outside of swimming too!
Millie throughly enjoyed her day, even though she was shattered by the end of it!
he has since been asked to attend a Phase 1 'top up' day in December in Loughborough. She continues to hope that she will be selected to a Phase 2 camp the next step towards England selection, in the future- pending good times and health!
