There was the small matter of swim training to start with. No question that our swimmers would take the night off (the LASAs are looming), but who wants to turn up to an Awards do whiffing of chlorine? Getting out a bit early was the answer. And those girlies still managed to straighten/curl their hair. They are amazing.
Elsewhere, the dress code for the boys was causing consternation.
Cocktail dress for the ladies - so far so normal - but 'lounge suits' for the men? Even after Googling 'lounge suits' it wasn't entirely clear what that meant. And one hapless swimmer only managed to procure a jacket with half an hour to spare.
Still, everyone got there in the end.
The evening was split into two parts with a meal first, and then the awards ceremony. The ticket allocations meant that the Glamorous Ladies of the Committee (GLOC) were at the meal, with swimmers and coaches arriving later.
And by the time the swimmers and coaches arrived?
The GLOC were looking remarkably relaxed (flushed?) thanks to the steady flow of champagne.
But the whole point of the evening was not the champagne, selfies with Liam Tancock or free teddy bears. Or free pepper mills for that matter.
It was to celebrate sport in Leicestershire - Jamie Vardy and the Foxes anyone? - and to find out who was going to be named Club of the Year.
Swimmers nibbled their nails in anticipation.
The GLOC quaffed more champagne.
And the Director of Swimming was seen to adjust an imaginary tie.
It's for every swimmer, parent, coach and committee member who gives up their sleep, Saturday nights, Sunday afternoons and more, for the good of swimming.
Thank you for your enthusiasm, commitment and tenacity. Without you, there is no club.
Not forgetting of course, the much valued support of our sponsors, Premier Logistics and Sygnet Signs. Thank you thank you thank you!
And although we could only send a delegation of swimmers to represent the club on the night, ALL swimmers will receive a Leicester Mercury Sports Award Winners Certificate. And that's definitely one to put on the mantelpiece.
Well done Leicester Sharks!
And what became of the swimmers, coaches, parents and GLOC after the awards?
There was a round of photos, and then the sensible ones headed home to bed.
They just don't know when to stop.
Although...if you can't party hard on the day you win a prestigious award, when can you?
The GLOC are forgiven.
