Why was he there, why in a chair and what was with the band?
Luke - who you may remember wearing THOSE shorts at the Penguins' Meet in October - broke his foot in three different places 10 days ago during a karate training session. In addition to swimming, Luke also plays football and is a black belt at Karate.
Whereas some young athletes might crumple at the thought of three weeks in a cast, deprived of sport, Luke stepped up (in a metaphorical kind of way). When Guy visited him with a stretchy band and suggested he work on his upper body strength, Luke turned to YouTube, found some exercises, and got to work.
So Guy invited him along the Monday night training session to teach the Training Performance squad some stretchy band moves. We're expecting a sharp rise in PBs and Midlands' times in the near future.
All credit to Luke for coping with a broken foot, missing the third and fourth galas of the LASAs, keeping a smile on his face AND putting his time to good use. Rumour has it that he was also sinking his wheelchair into mud at the weekend supporting his footie mates who were playing in the rain.
We hope to see you back in the pool soon Luke! (But don't let Brad get hold of the wheelchair again or you'll be in all sorts of trouble.)
